Description:
Trócaire works in partnership with local and church organisations, supporting communities in over 20 developing countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to bring about lasting change. The Post Primary Development Education Officer is responsible for developing and supporting Trócaire’s education agenda in the Post Primary sector in ROI. They will play a key role in delivering development education to young people as well as providing training and support for teachers in order to promote the concepts of justice, equality and global citizenship. They will also seek opportunities for collaboration with other education partners and engage with relevant networks in the development education sector. This role sits within the wider Public Engagement Division and is key to the fulfilment of Trócaire’s dual mandate.

Reporting to The Development Education Manager, this is a specific purpose contract and is based in Maynooth.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Work as an integral member of the Development Education (DE) team to achieve our DE mission and play an active role in the delivery of Trócaire’s Strategic Plan
• Work closely with other members of the DE team on key integrated programmes e.g. Trócaire Game Changers
• Work strategically within the formal education sector in Ireland to promote Trócaire’s DE programme
• Continue to develop and manage key relationships with schools, teacher groups, education stakeholders and third level institutions
• Design and facilitate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to support teachers to integrate DE into their teaching practice
• Create high-quality physical and digital DE resources for use in the post primary classroom that are integrated into existing and new curricula to raise the profile of development issues and Trócaire’s work
• Influence and inform education policy, practice and curricula by engaging in relevant education networks and with government bodies
• Seek opportunities for collaboration with other DE organisations through the promotion of the Trócaire’s Connecting for Impact partnership scheme
• Deliver outreach in schools and parishes as part of Trócaire’s Lenten Campaign and other key initiatives
• Provide training and support for school volunteers
• Ensure all interactions with stakeholders are recorded on Trócaire’s CRM system; and using the CRM system to inform and enhance supporter relations
• Employ quantitative and qualitative monitoring and evaluation practices and support the development of new tools to evaluate and measure impact in an educational context
• Lead on a research project to explore new ways to assess the impact of our DE resources
• Establish close cooperation with Trócaire’s overseas programmes to ensure that the voice of the communities we work in partnership with, is authentically represented in all of our communications with children, young people and educators
• Represent Trócaire publically as an organisation ambassador in agreed fora or through media
• Attend relevant stakeholder meetings and training as required
• Undertake work in other aspects of Trócaire’s DE programme as assigned by the DE Manager

Person Specification – Essential Requirements
(E) Qualification • Relevant third level qualification in education, preferably a teaching qualification
(E) Experience • Demonstrated commitment to DE
• Minimum of two years’ experience working in Post-Primary and/or DE sectors
• Experience of using active learning methodologies with children, young people and educators
• Experience of designing or contributing to the development of educational resources on global justice issues
• Knowledge and/or experience of the Post Primary curriculum in ROI
(E) Skills • Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Excellent facilitation skills
• Organisational skills – for planning and delivery of own programme of work while participating in wider programme of the DE Team
• Team skills – to be able to work within a very team-oriented approach as well as working independently
• Experience of using digital media for education
• Research – to be able to lead on research projects to enhance Trócaire’s DE programme
(E) Qualities • Flexibility – to be willing to work evenings and weekends as requested and to travel widely within Ireland
