POST DETAILS
Additional Information:
An internal panel of suitable applicants may be set up to fill vacancies which may occur within a specific time period (four months for teacher posts and the duration of the school year for SNA posts) from the date on which the Board approves the successful candidate.
The Board of Management of Leckaun National School invites applications for a permanent 0.5 Special Needs Assistant post, arising from the resignation of the current post holder. The post is based in the Junior Classroom (Junior Infants – 2nd Class).
Leckaun National School is a mixed, small, rural school with two mainstream classrooms. We have three teachers and 2.5 SNA posts. The successful candidate will be expected to respect the confidentiality of the pupils and school matters at all times and to respect and uphold the school’s Catholic ethos.
Working hours: For the first two weeks of the school year the post will operate on a morning basis to support the settling-in period. Thereafter the regular working day is approximately 10.40 a.m. to 1.55 p.m. daily. As a 0.5 post, the working hours are half of the full-time SNA working week in this school. The daily schedule is set by the Principal in line with the care needs of the pupils and may be adjusted as those needs change.
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms of the Special Needs Assistant contract for Standard Posts set out in Department of Education and Youth Circular 0039/2026, and will carry out duties in accordance with Circular 0032/2026 – The Role of Special Needs Assistants in recognised Primary, Post-Primary and Special Schools – and its accompanying Guidance Document (May 2026). Learning and Development time and School Community Time under the new arrangements apply on a pro-rata basis to this 0.5 post.
The role: In line with Circular 0032/2026, the SNA will support the attendance, participation and inclusion of pupils with special educational needs, to enable them to achieve their full potential. Duties include meeting core care needs; supporting regulation and communication needs; fostering pupil independence and wellbeing; assisting with transitions, movement and the school day routine; and contributing to student support planning and review as part of the class team, in collaboration with the class teacher, SET and Principal.
We are looking for individuals who can be flexible and responsive to the care needs of the children and the school. We invite those who are energetic, empathetic and enthusiastic, and who can contribute to our team and work on his/her own initiative.
Candidates must be willing to undertake CPD courses which relate to the needs of the children and the school. Experience and training working with children with Autism, emotional/behavioural needs and ADHD, and First Aid training, are highly desirable.
The successful candidate can be allocated to any SNA role in the school at any time, at the discretion of the school Principal.
Appointment is subject to a current Vetting Disclosure from the National Vetting Bureau (please include this in your application), Tusla Child Safeguarding e-learning training, Occupational Health Screening and satisfactory references.
Applicants who are deemed to be members of the SNA Supplementary Panel with supplementary panel rights must furnish a certified copy of a completed Panel Form (PF1) with their application.
