The Board of Management of Gortaleam National School Dunmore invites applications for the position of Principal Teacher.

Gortaleam NS is a co-educational Catholic Primary School under the patronage of the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Tuam.

The school has two Mainstream class teachers, one Autism class teacher, one SET teacher, two full-time SNA's, two part-time SNA's and a part-time Secretary, a Bus Escort, a Before and After school supervisor, a part-time cleaner and a part-time caretaker.

The roles and responsibilities of this post relate to the four domains of Leadership and Management as specified in Circular 0044/2019.

1. Leading Teaching and Learning

2. Managing the Organisation

3. Leading School Development

4. Developing Leadership Capacity

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with the strong inter-personal skills that are required to lead and maintain a happy, active, and progressive school community. A commitment to supporting the Catholic ethos of the school is essential. Likewise fostering links with the wider community is desirable.

In addition to high academic expectations pupils are provided with opportunities to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.


Applicants should;
-Be fully registered with the Teaching Council under Route 1 (Primary) with the Teaching Council
-5 years recognised teaching service.
-Experience in working with children with an Autism diagnosis or children with special educational needs is desirable.
-Demonstrate a commitment to supporting the Catholic ethos of the school.
-Have the leadership skills necessary for the role.
-Have a passion for teaching.
-Put the good of the children at the centre of decision making.
-Be open to engage with parents as partners in education.
-Have a knowledge of the functions of the Board of Management.
-Be willing to engage with the wider community for the good of the school.
-Display evidence of ongoing professional development.
-Be fully up to date with child protection procedures and policies.
-Have the ability to engage with colleagues in a professional and positive manner.
-Be able to engage correctly with the Patron and the Department of Education and Youth in school related matters.
