Carn National School is a rural Catholic primary school under the patronage of the Bishop of Achonry & Elphin, Kevin Doran.
It has five mainstream class teachers, 1 full time and 1 part time Special Education Teachers and three Special Needs Assistants.
Applications are invited from fully qualified teachers with a minimum of five years teaching service, who are registered with the Teaching Council (Route 1 Primary), for the position of Deputy Principal. This is a permanent position commencing as soon as possible. The appointment will be made through open competition.

Circular 0044/2019 states: ‘While the Principal is ultimately responsible to the Board of Management, as appropriate, for the leadership and management of the school, the Deputy Principal occupies a position of vital importance within the senior leadership team in a school. Shared leadership requires openness and willingness on the part of Principals and Deputy Principals, to share and to distribute leadership and management responsibilities in a manner that encourages and supports partnership. The Deputy Principal co-operates with the Principal in the fulfilment of the Principal’s role and acts or deputises as the Principal in the Principal’s absence.’

The Deputy Principal will work with the Principal to support and develop effective leadership within the school.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities for this position relate to the four domains of Leadership and Management as specified in Circular 0044/2019:
1. Leading Teaching and Learning
2. Managing the Organisation
3. Leading School Development
4. Developing Leadership Capacity

In accordance with Circular 0044/2019, it should be noted that as the needs of the school continuously evolve, a review of duties may result in reassignment of the role and responsibilities within the leadership and management team.

Shortlisting and the interview process will be based on the four domains above, as well as the following criteria:
• A strong commitment to upholding and promoting the Catholic ethos of Carn National School.
• A commitment to shared leadership and willingness to delegate and develop leadership capacity and empower others.
• Effective interpersonal, communication and people management skills. Proven ability to work as a member of a team in a collaborative manner.
• Strong curriculum knowledge including the new Primary Maths Curriculum and an ability to adapt teaching to meet group and individual needs.
• Experience and ability in leading whole school initiatives.
• Understanding and knowledge of the requirement associated with the provision of Special Education Needs, inclusion and diversity.
• Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and foster positive and supportive relationships with all staff members, Board of Management, outside agencies, parents/guardians and the wider school community.
• Evidence of ability to create a culture of learning and creativity within the school.
• Willingness to organise school events and to engage parental involvement in school life.
• A thorough understanding of the School Self Evaluation (SSE) process and experience with school improvement initiatives from planning through to implementation.
• The ability to work collaboratively in planning, supervision, timetabling and with IT systems ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
• Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the evolving needs of the school.
• Evidence of a strong commitment to continuous professional development.
• Willingness and ability to partake in mentoring programmes and initiatives.

Appointment is subject, but not limited to, satisfactory references (please provide 3 referees), current and continuing Teaching Council registration, current Garda vetting requirements and Occupational Health Screening.
