Subject discipline(s)
Irish and English

Candidates for Secondary School posts must:
• Have a recognised primary degree in the relevant subject discipline(s)
• Have a recognised teaching qualification
• Have at least three years’ satisfactory service as a mainstream class teacher
subsequent to full registration with the Teaching Council
• Be serving as a teacher in a recognised school in Ireland (or be on
secondment or career break from such a position).

Additional pre-requisites Secondary School posts:
Applicants for secondment to the ES system undergo a separate oral language assessment in a vehicular language (French or German) or host country language. Knowledge of the language of the place of employment is particularly desirable. Applicants are asked to indicate their general level of spoken competence in their chosen language as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). The three levels referenced in the CEFR are basic user, independent user and proficient user. Applicants will be assessed according to the level they have indicated. For appointment to a European School, a basic spoken competence in the candidate’s selected language is usually expected. However, if a candidate excels in every other respect at interview and commits to learning a vehicular or the host country language during their secondment to the school that will be looked upon favourably.

Salary, allowances, pension and secondment term:
Teachers receive a salary paid by the Department of Education, pensionable under the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. A European salary paid by the European Schools supplements this. Details of remuneration and allowances for teachers are available on the European Schools’ website www.eursc.eu. Each post is a secondment for a maximum term of nine years.
