Additional Information:
Minimum 2 hours per week | 2026–2027 Academic Year
The Board of Management of St. Joseph’s Special School invites applications for the following position for the 2026–2027 academic year:
Teacher – Physical Education – minimum 2 hours per week
This position is available for a minimum of 2 hours per week, with the possibility that additional hours may become available through other school contracts or additional teaching opportunities during the school year, subject to school requirements, funding, timetabling and the skills and availability of the successful applicant.
While the hours currently available are limited, we would particularly encourage applications from teachers who have an enthusiasm for Physical Education and who would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the wider life of a vibrant special-school setting. There may be opportunities for additional hours where the successful applicant’s skills and availability align with emerging school needs; however, no additional hours can be guaranteed at this stage.
Applicants should hold an appropriate Teaching Council-recognised teaching qualification and be eligible for registration with the Teaching Council. A qualification or specialism in Physical Education would be particularly desirable. However, we also welcome applications from suitably qualified teachers who have relevant PE teaching experience, skills, interests or additional qualifications, and who can demonstrate an ability to deliver engaging, inclusive and appropriately adapted physical education experiences for pupils with additional needs.
This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher who is enthusiastic about Physical Education and enjoys working across a range of ages and abilities within a supportive special-school environment.
We would particularly welcome applicants with:
A qualification or recognised teaching specialism in Physical Education;
Experience teaching PE or delivering physical activity programmes;
An interest in developing inclusive and enjoyable physical activity opportunities for pupils;
Experience adapting PE activities to meet a range of abilities and individual needs;
Knowledge and experience of positive behaviour support strategies;
A flexible, creative and child-centred approach to teaching.
St. Joseph’s Special School caters for pupils aged 4–18 years with Mild General Learning Disabilities (GLD). Our pupils may also have additional and/or complex needs. St. Joseph’s School is under the patronage of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore and is committed to fostering an inclusive, caring and supportive Catholic educational environment. Applicants should be committed to supporting and contributing positively to the ethos of the school.
How to Apply
Applications should be submitted by email to office@stjosephsspecialschool.ie before 12 noon on [closing date].
