St. Joseph’s Special School is designated as a special school for students 4-18 years of age who have been assessed as being in the Mild General Learning Disability Range. Many of our students would have additional needs such as Autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, Social Emotional and Behavioural Needs and /or Behaviours that Challenge. Experience of working in a special school environment and/or with students with Autism would be desirable and beneficial but not essential. Experience of working with students who present with behaviours that challenge in a positive, proactive manner would also be desirable but not essential.
We currently have 7 classes- 3 Primary classes in the junior end of the school and 4 Post Primary aged classes. Primary aged students follow the Primary curriculum while senior students follow the Level 1 or Level 2 Junior Cycle programme. With one class now following the new level 2 Senior Cycle programme.
It is intended that this post will be for the Junior end of the school. The class position for this post is subject to change depending on the skills/qualities/experience of the successful candidate and the future needs of the school.
Appointments will be subject to satisfactory references, occupational health screening, Teaching Council registration and up to date Garda Vetting. Candidates must hold Teaching Council route 1,2 or 4 to be eligible for these posts.
Successful candidates will be required to attend whole school training and class set up days on Aug 26th and Aug 27th. St. Joseph’s will be changing to the patronage of the Diocese of Elphin in the very near future.
