The ideal candidate will have previous experience of working with pupils with Severe or Profound General Learning Difficulties.

Carmona School is located in Dun Laoghaire and caters for pupils with severe or profound general learning disabilities aged 4-18 years. The position advertised is to work with teachers who currently support our post-primary pupils. We would love to give a fresh and renewed focus to the The Arts Priority Learning Unit for our post primary pupils, in particular the element of Drama. In our school the pupils have a Severe or Profound General Learning Difficulty, with the majority of our pupils presenting as pre-verbal. We rely on a Total Communication Approach to ensure pupil happiness, understanding and effective communication - this entails using Lamh, IT programmes such as The Grid, Eye Gaze technology, visual aids and objects of reference. As a whole school we place huge value and importance on the artistic process and we celebrate every achievement made by our pupils on their creative journey. As part of their Junior Cycle Level 1 Programme, we would investigate the possibility of having a final performance piece to share with the school, parents and friends.

The learning intentions would include;

Show an awareness of being part of an audience
Explore and react to props, costumes, actions and sensory stimuli in a dramatic context
Participate in the re/telling of contemporary/ historical/cultural events or stories through interactive games and/or dramatic activities
Show an awareness of being part of an acting group
Co-operate or work alongside/in parallel with others in making, choosing and using props, costumes and sets
Work independently or collaboratively to produce a rehearsed piece of drama for an audience
Express and/or identify emotions in a dramatic context
Our Level 1 pupils and our Senior Cycle pupils follow the Junior Cycle Level 1 Programmes. Teachers use the SEN Pathways to assess pupil work and experiences and plan for differentiated experiences for each pupil. Some of our pupils move between Experiencing and Attending, while others can acquire skills to Become Fluent and eventually Generalising. Teacher input to our post primary pupils needs to be considerate of where each pupil is on this Pathway - celebrating their achievements and working creatively to inspire them to move to the next stages.

We have a whole school approach to Positive Behaviour Supports and we also follow a Total Communication approach.

We are a small and dynamic school team of 8 teachers and 21 SNAs, that values collaboration in the classroom as well as in the planning and assessment process. Following years of this collaborative approach, the school now has a suite of resources that are incorporated into a package to support new staff joining the team to ensure a positive transition to our unique setting.

Carmona School has a full-time HSE Multi-Disciplinary Team attached to the school. Currently on campus we are supported by a full-time Occupational Therapist, a full-time Speech and Language Therapist, a part-time Physiotherapist and a part-time Behaviour Support Specialist. These therapists work with our school pupils ensuring that vital inputs and supports are readily available to our classroom teams of teachers and SNAs.
